The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II, and is only let out for holidays. Set during the Christmas of 1183, this fiery play centers around the inner conflicts of the Plantagenet family as they are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. As Eleanor says, “Every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action, THE LION IN WINTER is a classic of the American theater, made even more popular by the 1968 film starring Peter O’Toole and Katharine Hepburn. Our intimate Cellar production promises to be a theatrical experience that you won’t soon forget. theatrical experience that you won’t soon

Role # 1 Henry II
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

King of England. Though aging, Henry is still very nearly as vital as he ever was. He is a master manipulator and an experienced fighter. He is jovially brash from a history of victories and is the ablest king of his age.

Role # 2 Queen Eleanor
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

Eleanor is the wife of Henry and a beautiful woman of intelligence, passion, wit, and great authority and presence. She has been a queen for nearly 46 years and has out-queen’ed most kings. She schemes against Henry and loves him intensely at the same time. She has contempt for her children but, ultimately, is not willing to see them harmed.

Gender: Female
Age: from 61 to 62

Role # 3 Prince John
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

He is the youngest son of Henry and Eleanor. He is sulky and sullen but ambitious, with a boyish outlook on his position; many in the play describe him as a spoiled brat, and, indeed, he’s been given what the other sons have had to fight for. He is described in the play as pimply and smelling of compost. He is Henry’s favourite, but also the weakest. He vacillates throughout the play, not out of cleverness, but out of fear and weakness. He is easily tricked and manipulated by Geoffrey.

Gender: Male
Age: from 16 to 17

Role # 4 Prince Geoffrey
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

He is a son of Henry and Eleanor, and a man of energy and action. He is attractive, charming and has the strongest intellect of the family; he is also a cold, amoral schemer. His view of himself is of one who yearned greatly for the love of his parents while receiving none. Yet the play leaves open to question whether any of Henry’s three sons should be thought to have been truly loved by either Henry or Eleanor and not merely used by King and Queen as pawns in their ceaseless scheming against one another.

Gender: Male
Age: from 25 to 26

Role # 5 Prince Richard
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

The eldest surviving son of Henry and Eleanor, their second son Henry having recently died. Richard is handsome, graceful and impressive and has been a famous soldier since his middle teens. War is his profession and he is good at it. He is easily the strongest and toughest of the three sons/princes. Richard and Philip Capet have been sexually involved prior to the action of the play. However, Philip declares that he participated in the affair purely for political purposes, whereas Richard indicates he had genuine affection for Philip.

Gender: Male
Age: from 26 to 27

Role # 6 Alais Capet
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

She is Richard’s promised bride, Philip’s older half-sister, and Henry’s longtime mistress. Everyone underestimates her intellect and power, maybe even her. By the end of the play she has begun to play with kings and queens, insisting that Henry imprison his three sons for the rest of their lives in the dungeon.

Gender: Female
Age: from 23 to 24

Role # 7 Philip II
Seeking 1 talent(s) for this role

He has been King of France for three years and aches to avenge how much his (and Alais’) father was out-king’ed by Henry. He is not initially as accomplished as Henry in manipulating people, but seems to acquire greater skills at this during the play. He is impressive and handsome without being pretty.
